According to its function, the basic structure of an injection mold can be divided into seven parts: gating system, molding parts, side parting line, guiding mechanism, ejection device and core-pulling mechanism, cooling and heating system, and venting system. These seven parts are explained below:
1. Gating System: This refers to the plastic flow channel in the mold from the injection nozzle to the cavity. A typical gating system consists of the main runner, branch runners, gate, and cold slug well.
2. Side Parting Line and Core-Pulling Mechanism

Guiding Mechanism: In plastic molds, the guiding mechanism mainly functions to position, guide, and withstand certain lateral pressure, ensuring accurate mold closing between the moving and fixed molds. The mold closing guiding mechanism consists of guide pillars, guide sleeves or guide holes (directly opened on the mold plate), and positioning cone surfaces.
4. Ejection Device: Primarily responsible for ejecting the part from the mold, it consists of ejector pins or ejector tubes or push plates, ejector plates, ejector pin fixing plates, return rods, and pull rods.
5. Cooling and heating system.
6. Exhaust system.
7. Molding parts: These refer to the parts that constitute the mold cavity. They mainly include: punches, dies, cores, forming rods, forming rings, and inserts, etc.
