What is Injection Molding?
Plastic injection molding is a manufacturing process that allows for the rapid, high-volume production of finished parts. It works by injecting molten material into a mold, most commonly used for thermoplastic and thermosetting polymers.
Thanks to the high performance of high-tech polymers, this process is widely used in the production of plastic parts for industries such as medical, aerospace, automotive, and oil and gas, enabling the finished products to withstand critical conditions such as high temperatures and pressures, chemical reagents, and friction.
How Does It Work?
The first stage of injection molding is creating the mold itself. Most molds are made of metal, typically aluminum or steel, and they are precision-machined to match the features and geometry of the parts to be produced.
Once the mold is designed, the polymer for the part is fed into a heated barrel and mixed. Heating belts melt the material in the barrel, and the molten plastic material is then fed into the mold cavity, where it cools and hardens to match the shape of the mold.
When is it used?
Injection molding is used to manufacture a wide range of products, especially when hundreds of identical parts need to be produced from a mold.
What are the main advantages?
The main advantage of injection molding is its ability to scale up production to manufacture large quantities of parts. Once the initial costs of design and molds are covered, manufacturing costs are low, and production costs decrease as more parts are produced.
Even in high-volume production, this technology allows for the production of many identical and reliable parts, ensuring consistent quality and zero waste.
What plastics are used in injection molding?
In addition to the most commonly used plastics, there are specialty and niche plastics belonging to the high-performance polymer and fluoropolymer families.
