Types and Selection of Injection Mold Steel: HUIWEN Plastics uses many types of steel for manufacturing plastic injection molds, each with different processing performance and market supply prices.
1. Alloy Structural Steel
Alloy structural steel offers better performance than carbon structural steel, resulting in longer service life for injection mold components.
Classified by main alloying elements, alloy structural steels used in plastic molds can be categorized as chromium steel, chromium-nickel steel, chromium-molybdenum steel, chromium-nickel-molybdenum steel, chromium-molybdenum-aluminum steel, and chromium-manganese-titanium steel, etc.
While alloy structural steel offers better performance than carbon structural steel, its hardenability and heat treatment deformation properties are not significantly improved. It is generally unsuitable for manufacturing complex or large-sized integral molds and punches. It is used in some large and complex molds for smaller local dimensions. However, it is still suitable for moving parts or molding inserts requiring high hardness and wear resistance.
2. Carbon Structural Steel
Carbon structural steel is inexpensive and has good machinability. Its strength is lower at low carbon content and higher at high carbon content, but its hardenability is poor, resulting in significant deformation during heat treatment.
Carbon structural steel has poor polishing properties. It can be used to manufacture injection mold forming parts for small-batch production of plastic parts where dimensional accuracy and surface roughness requirements are not high. It can also be used to manufacture guide pillars, guide sleeves, and support components for injection molds.
