- Uniform Wall Thickness: Ensure that walls have 1.5-4 mm thickness (ideal for majority of household plastics) to prevent sinks, warpage and stresses in the mold cavity. Sudden change in wall thickness must not exceed 20% to provide even cooling in the mold.
- Reinforcement Elements: Implement ribs (thickness should not exceed 3×wall thickness and must have distance of 2× rib thickness) and bosses (include fillets on boss base with R = 0.5 mm) to increase strength without affecting overall mass. This is necessary for such items as detergent container caps and vacuum cleaners housing parts.
- Improving Impact Strength: Make corners of the product rounded (R >1 mm); do not design thin and raised elements since they may easily fracture when subjected to an impact (for instance, handle for storage containers).
- Protection against Chemical and Environmental Influences: If there will be constant contact between the part and detergent, oil and food, make sure the part's surface is smooth so no residues will accumulate inside it. Also avoid designing difficult-to-clean cavities (as per FDA regulations).
- Clearance between Movable Parts: Consider the assembly clearance 0.1-0.3 mm between moving parts that need to be assembled frequently (like blender lids, bags for garbage cans).
