How to Avoid Odors in Injection Molding
2025,12,08
When purchasing injection molded parts, we sometimes encounter situations where there is an unpleasant odor, which can significantly impact the user's health. So, how can we avoid odors during injection molding? Let's take a brief look.
1. Strictly Control the Use of Additives
The tertiary amine catalysts used in the production of polyurethane foam can produce a strong odor and cause fogging on car windows. We can find substitutes for these amines using polyhydroxy compounds. Polyhydroxy compounds are not only components of the polyurethane molecular chain but also possess catalytic activity. Some polyhydroxy compounds can even replace half of the tertiary amine catalyst, thus reducing the odor of the injection molded product.
2. Choose Purer Resins
Many plastic molds, especially those containing polyvinyl chloride, styrene, ethyl acetate, and acrylates, retain trace amounts of monomers that can produce an unpleasant odor. Using odorless resins is more effective.
3. Pay Attention to the Use of Adsorbents
Adding a small amount of zeolite to the polymer can effectively remove the material odor. Zeolites have many crystalline vacuoles, which can trap small gas molecules with odors.
