A customer in Beijing contacted us on the HUIWEN Plastics official website, inquiring about the price of a mold for a medical LED pen. A plastic mold quote requires an evaluation of multiple factors, including material costs and processing fees. Many people are unaware of the quote process and are prone to being scammed by unscrupulous suppliers. Below, our HUIWEN Plastics editor will explain the quote process to help you avoid pitfalls.
 
I. Plastic Mold Quotation Methods
1. Empirical Calculation Method
Based on experience, we generally calculate the mold price by adding material costs, design fees, processing fees, profit margin, VAT, mold trial fees, and packaging and shipping costs. The typical ratio is: material cost (30%-40%), processing fee: 30%, design fee: 5-10%, mold trial (3-5%), packaging and shipping fee: 5%, VAT: 13%, and profit margin: 20%.
2. Material Coefficient Method
Mold material cost can be calculated based on mold size and material price.
Mold price = (3-6) * material cost; for forging molds and plastic molds = 6 * material cost; for die-casting molds = 10 * material cost.
 
II. Plastic Mold Quotation Process
1. First, consider the customer's requirements and decide on the material selection and heat treatment process.
2. After selecting the materials, create a rough mold design. From this, calculate the mold weight (calculate the prices of the core and mold frame materials) and the required heat treatment costs. (All figures are blank weights.)
3. Calculate the processing cost. Depending on the complexity of the mold core, the processing cost is generally 1.5-3 times the core material price, while the mold base processing cost is generally 1:1.
4. The risk fee is 10% of the total price.
5. The design fee is 10% of the total mold price.
 
III. Plastic Mold Quotation Strategies and Settlement Methods
 
The mold settlement price is calculated after the mold is manufactured and delivered for use. During this process, it is often hoped that the mold estimate = mold price = mold settlement price. However, in practice, these three prices are not completely equal and may fluctuate. This is the issue discussed below.
After the mold estimate is completed, it needs to be properly processed and compiled into a mold quotation to serve as the basis for signing the mold processing contract. After repeated negotiations and discussions, a mutually acceptable mold price is reached and the contract is signed. Only then can mold processing officially begin.
 
IV. Mold Valuation and Quotation
After confirming the mold estimate, it cannot be immediately used as a quote. The overall market trend must be considered and the client must be consulted repeatedly. However, if the negotiated price is 10% lower than the estimate, a new estimate will be refined. A mold processing contract will be signed and the mold price will be finalized, ensuring a break-even point.
