Precautions for Polishing Injection Molds
Polishing injection molds serves two purposes: one is to increase the smoothness of the mold, making the surface of the molded product smooth, beautiful, and aesthetically pleasing; the other is to facilitate easy demolding, preventing the plastic from sticking to the mold and becoming difficult to remove.
The precautions for polishing injection molds are as follows:
(1) When starting to process a new mold cavity, first check the surface of the workpiece and clean it with kerosene to prevent dirt from adhering to the oilstone and causing it to lose its cutting function.
(2) When grinding rough textures, proceed in order from difficult to easy, especially grinding some hard-to-grind corners and deeper bottoms first.
(3) Some workpieces may be assembled from multiple parts and polished together. First, grind the rough textures or spark marks of each individual workpiece separately, and then assemble all the workpieces and polish them until smooth. (4) For workpieces with large flat surfaces or side surfaces, use an oilstone to remove rough textures, then use a straight steel sheet for light transmission inspection to check for unevenness or undercuts. Undercuts can cause difficulties in demolding or damage to the part.
(5) To prevent undercuts from forming on the mold workpiece or to protect certain contact surfaces, use a saw blade or sandpaper to attach to the edges for ideal protection.
(6) When polishing the mold surface, pull the oilstone back and forth, keeping the handle as flat as possible, not exceeding 25°. Too much angle will cause the force to come from top to bottom, easily creating many rough textures on the workpiece.
(7) If polishing the workpiece surface with sandpaper pressed against a copper or bamboo strip, the sandpaper should not be larger than the tool area; otherwise, it will polish areas that shouldn't be polished.
(8) The shape of the polishing tool should closely match the surface shape of the mold to ensure the workpiece is not deformed.
If the above points are followed, the polished appearance of the injection mold will be very beautiful.
