Revealed: How is the plastic case of the iPhone5C made?

 

 

Apple's refinement of craftsmanship is an attempt to rid the iPhone 5C of its "plastic" embarrassment. Since the launch of the iPhone 5C, Phil Schiller, Apple's chief marketing officer, has shown the manufacturing process behind the device in an effort to re-emphasize Apple's craftsmanship.

 

 

At present, most plastic mobile phones often have insufficient rigidity, and in order to overcome this problem, Apple adopted a new construction process, in the hard coated polycarbonate shell to install steel substructure to improve the robustness of the whole phone. Apple's design doesn't just solve the antennagate problem that previously occurred on the iPhone 4/4S, but the metal structure can act as a multi-band antenna and then be seamlessly embedded into the polycarbonate through glue.

 

 

 

Jony Ive, Apple's senior vice president, said the newly designed steel frame structure makes it easy to embed custom metal frames into polycarbonate plastic, which Apple calls "bespoke assembly." The bottom plate of the iPhone 5C is moved to the CNC machine to earn delicate holes such as cameras and headphones. Because this can be cut rather than added, it does not cause any harm to the integrity of the iPhone 5C's polycarbonate outer layer.
